Accessibility

Our products are for everyone. Accessibility is at the heart of everything we design and build at Shell. Our goal is to ensure everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to get things done. We listen to our customers and continuously seek ways to build the most inclusive digital experiences.

Accessible design matters

We test and review our designs and markup to provide an accessible foundation for your application development. However, to ensure you build an accessible product, you will need to apply accessibility best practice for the specific context of your content. That can include keyboard behaviour, the management of ARIA (Accessibility Rich Internet Applications) roles and properties, and text-based alternatives for images, videos and other rich media.

At Shell, we believe that accessibility powers conscious inclusion because everyone benefits from inclusive design.

Accessible by design means designing products which remove barriers for people with permanent, temporary, or situational disabilities; cultural differences including language, or technological limitations.

Inclusive digital products built with the Shell Design System are focused on user experience. That means semantically correct components and an accessible user interface.

Validating your applications

The Shell Design System is the foundation for creating your accessible digital product. It is vital that you review the accessibility of your application before release and ensure that it meets the WCAG 2.1 Standards at AA Level (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).
